Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The Supreme Court of India has returned to its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges following the swearing-in of Justices NV Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S Chandurkar. The oath-taking ceremony was held on Friday at the Supreme Court's extension building in New Delhi, with Chief Justice of India BR Gavai administering the oath of office.
These appointments come after the retirement of former Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Abhay S Oka and Hrishikesh Roy. The President confirmed their elevation based on the Supreme Court collegium's recommendation earlier this week.
Following tradition, the newly appointed judges joined benches in order of seniority on their first day. Justice Anjaria joined CJI Gavai’s bench, Justice Bishnoi joined Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Chandurkar sat with Justice Vikram Nath. Their regular bench assignments will be announced soon.
Justice Anjaria, previously Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, hails from Gujarat. Justice Bishnoi, from Rajasthan, was serving as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. Justice Chandurkar, from the Bombay High Court, is known for his work in Nagpur. Their inclusion ensures that all vacancies in the apex court are currently filled.
